Prayer offered by Josh Hale

(picture of Ben and Josh on the morning of the start of their freshman year, August 1998)

Prayer offered by Josh:

Gracious God,

you have ordered this wonderful world and know all things:

the heights & the depths, things visible and invisible.

Every part finds their place & purpose in you,

and so we thank you for those we love but see no more.

You have shared with us the life of Ben.

Before he was ours, he is yours.

For all that Ben has given us to make us what we are,

for that of him which lives and grows in each of us,

and for his life that in your love will never end,

we give you thanks.

Be graceful with the sorrow of Ben's family and friends;

Amidst things we cannot understand, help us to trust in your care.

As we offer Ben back into your arms,

comfort us in our loneliness,

strengthen us in our weakness,

and give us courage to face the future unafraid.

Draw those of us who remain in this life closer to one another,

make us faithful to serve one another,

and give us to know that peace and joy which is eternal.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console;

to be understood as to understand;

to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
